A basic sailing rig consists of the keel, which is the bottom of the boat; the mast, which is the top of the boat; the boom, which is the front of the boat and the main rope which connect all the parts together. As the name suggests, a boom is the tall part of the keel that juts out in front of the keel. While this may seem unsightly, it actually provides greater stability when using a standard boat and is much easier to handle. Booms are also commonly known as long Johns and are usually used for larger boats with more powerful engines.
Now that you know what a rig is and what it’s used for, it’s time to move on to the main points of the rig. The keel, or stern, is where the boat’s center of gravity is located. On the main line, the keel separates from the main stem while on the transom the keel is completely detached. On the main stem, the keel has the weight of the boat while on the transom it’s weight and center of gravity are shared by the mast and main line. While these differences may look small at first, they have a tremendous effect on how the boat rides on the surface and how the rig itself moves.
This short description of each of the major rig types gives you a good starting point for choosing your own sailing boat. If you’re not sure which type is best for you, or if you aren’t very experienced, don’t be afraid to ask questions of people who sail in your same type of boat. They’ll be glad to help!
What is a boat without a keel called?
A boat without a keel or a paddle is called a boat without a hull. How can you tell if your boat has no keel or if it’s simply missing one? First, check the number of holes at the stern. This will be easily visible because of the water surrounding the motor of the boat. If there are none, then there is no keel and your boat cannot be classified as a sailing boat.
You might also want to look at the shape of the boat. Does it have a long shape? It should not be square or rectangular. If it’s not long, then it probably is a flat bottomed boat. There are boats with rounded bottoms, but these are more often than not inflatable boats.
Finally, you should have an idea of how old your boat is. If it is more than a year old, then you have a pretty good chance that it doesn’t have a keel or a paddle. But don’t lose hope. These boats are around! They have been out in the water long enough to acquire rust and the inevitable flaws that come with age. If your boat is still very much usable after this point, then you have a boat that has a legitimate hull.
